A Bribery Arrest in Krasnoyarsk

The Moscow Times Police caught Deputy Krasnoyarsk Governor Valery Suladze red-handed accepting a bribe of $250,000 Friday and arrested him, RIA-Novosti reported.

Police said Suladze, who was in charge of construction and roads in the western Siberian region, had been under surveillance for the past three months, according to RIA-Novosti.

Suladze managed to retain his post in a series of revamps of the regional government conducted by Governor Alexander Lebed before he died in a helicopter crash in April.

Suladzes department has been under fire after the Krasnoyarsk audit chamber issued a harsh report in April accusing it of misappropriating regional funds. Regional press reported that the audit chamber accused Suladzes department of frequently refusing to conduct tenders among the local contractors as required by law and extending funds to some of them without checking how they were spent. The department misspent tens of millions of rubles, the Regions.ru news agency reported last week.
